M6 vs M5 MacBook Pro: Should You Upgrade? (Honest Take)
Apple claims up to 30% faster graphics and 25% faster AI. Who should upgrade to the M6 MacBook Pro from an M5, M1 or Intel Mac, and who shouldn't.
Every new Apple chip comes with big percentages. The M6 is no different: up to 30% faster graphics, up to 25% faster on-device AI, up to 1.9x faster Neural Engine. But percentages don't tell you whether your laptop is worth replacing. Let's work it out by what you own today.
What changed from M5 to M6
Apple's own app comparisons against the 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro: up to 1.3x faster Xcode builds, up to 1.3x faster Blender ray-tracing renders and up to 1.2x faster Affinity image processing. These are Apple's tests on specific configurations — real-world gains depend on your work.
- CPU: 12 cores on the M6 — Apple says two more than before
- GPU: 12 cores with Neural Accelerators in each core
- Neural Engine: dual 16-core, which Apple says is up to 1.9x faster than M5
- Memory: 16GB standard, up to 32GB, with memory bandwidth up to 170GB/s (reports suggest the top bandwidth figure may not apply to every configuration)
- Battery: up to 24 hours — Apple says the longest ever in a Mac
- Wireless: Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6
- Design, ports and display: essentially the same as before — three Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI, SDXC, MagSafe 3, Liquid Retina XDR
If you own an M5 MacBook Pro
Don't upgrade. A 20–30% improvement on some tasks is real, but it won't change your day. The design is the same, the ports are the same, and your M5 is barely a year old. The exception: if your work is dominated by on-device AI and you're memory-limited, the right move is a machine with more memory (an M5 Pro or Max), not the M6.
If you own an M3 or M4
Probably not yet. You'll notice the battery and the faster AI features, but most development and creative work will feel similar. Wait another generation unless your laptop is struggling with memory, or you can sell it at a good price.
If you own an M1 or M2
This is where upgrading makes sense. Apple claims the M6 delivers up to 11x faster graphics and up to 13x faster AI performance than the 13-inch M1, up to 2.5x faster Xcode builds, and up to four more hours of battery versus M1 machines. If your M1 has 8GB of memory, the jump to 16GB alone will be the biggest improvement you feel.
If you own an Intel MacBook
Upgrade. Apple says Intel-based upgraders gain up to 14 additional hours of battery life, and newer macOS releases and AI features increasingly expect Apple silicon. Your Intel Mac's resale value is only going down.
Selling your current Mac in India? Resale prices drop sharply after a new launch. Sell before the new models are widely in stores, wipe it properly, and keep the bill and box — they noticeably improve offers.
The India price check
The 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro launched at ₹2,39,900 (₹2,27,900 with education pricing). Previous-generation M5 models often get discounted by resellers after a launch — if you're coming from Intel or M1 and don't need the newest AI performance, a discounted M5 with 16GB can be the better value. Compare total cost, including bank offers, before deciding.
Quick decision table
- Intel Mac: upgrade to M6 (or a discounted M5)
- M1 / M2: upgrade if you can afford it — the gains are large
- M3 / M4: wait unless memory is your bottleneck
- M5: keep it
Bottom line
The M6 MacBook Pro is a solid, incremental step. It's a great buy for people coming from Intel, M1 or M2, and an unnecessary one for M4 and M5 owners. For the full launch picture, see everything Apple announced in October 2026.
