M6 MacBook Pro for Developers in India: Worth ₹2,39,900?
Twelve CPU cores, 24-hour battery and faster local AI — but is the M6 MacBook Pro worth ₹2.4 lakh for an Indian developer? A practical breakdown.
₹2,39,900 is roughly a month's salary for a senior engineer in many Indian cities — and several months' salary for a fresher. So the question isn't "is the M6 MacBook Pro good?" (it almost certainly is), but "is it worth that money for the work you do?" Here's how to decide like an engineer, not like a fan.
What you actually get for the money
- M6 chip: 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine
- 16GB unified memory standard (configurable to 32GB); Indian launch reports list 1TB storage on the base model
- Up to 24 hours of battery life (Apple's testing)
- Three Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI, MagSafe 3, SDXC, Wi-Fi 7
- Apple's claims vs the M5 model: up to 1.3x faster Xcode builds, up to 25% faster on-device AI, up to 30% faster graphics
Workloads where it earns its price
Native iOS and macOS development
Xcode is where Apple's chips shine, and Apple claims up to 2.5x faster project builds than a 13-inch M1 machine. If you build iOS apps all day, compile time is money, and the Pro's sustained performance and cooling matter more than on a fanless laptop.
Containers and backend work
Docker Desktop, local Kubernetes, a database and an IDE running together will happily eat 16GB. If your day looks like that, treat 16GB as the floor, not the ceiling — configure 32GB if you can stretch the budget. Memory, not CPU, is what makes a dev laptop feel slow two years in.
Local AI and LLM experiments
The headline gain is on-device AI. If you're experimenting with local models, embeddings or AI-assisted coding tools that run on your machine, the M6's Neural Engine and GPU improvements are directly useful. For large models, though, memory caps you — 32GB is the practical maximum on this model. If serious local LLM work is your job, look at the M5 Pro/Max machines instead (see our local AI guide).
Workloads where it's overkill
- Web development with a browser, VS Code and a dev server — a MacBook Neo or Air handles this comfortably
- Interview preparation, DSA practice and LeetCode — any modern laptop works
- Learning to code as a student — spend the difference on courses and projects, not cores
- Mostly remote work on cloud machines — your laptop is a fancy terminal
The Indian money maths
A ₹2.4 lakh laptop used for four years costs about ₹5,000 a month. That's reasonable if it saves you real time every day or is central to your income — say you freelance on iOS apps or build ML prototypes. It's hard to justify if your company already gives you a laptop, or if you're spending borrowed money while job hunting.
Before buying, check three things: whether your employer provides a machine (many Indian product companies and GCCs give MacBooks), whether education pricing applies to you (₹2,27,900 at launch), and current bank cashback or No Cost EMI offers — launch reports mentioned up to ₹15,000 cashback, but these change often.
M6 Pro vs the alternatives
- vs MacBook Neo (from ₹69,900 at launch): Neo is enough for learning, web dev and interview prep; the Pro is for heavy builds, containers and AI.
- vs M5 Pro OLED MacBook Pro (from ₹3,49,900): get the OLED Pro only if you need more than 32GB memory, more external displays or a top-tier display for creative work.
- vs a discounted M5 MacBook Pro: if you can find a good price on the previous model, the M6's gains (Apple claims about 1.3x on builds) may not justify the gap. See M6 vs M5.
Verdict
Buy the M6 MacBook Pro if your daily work involves Xcode, containers, or on-device AI and you'll keep it for four years — and spec 32GB if you can. Skip it if you're learning, interviewing or doing light web work; a Neo or Air plus the savings will serve your career better.
